With the outbeak of World War II, microwave receiving
techonology advanced rapidly. The key to such advances
included the British invention of the magnetron tube. Radar
operators throughout the war observed unexplained signals
from the sky. Many of these operators had been recruited
from best physics and engineering graduate schools. Some of
these operators wered destined to return to their academic
lives with new curiosity about these extra-terrestrial radio
sources.
