The VLA was contructed in the shape of a Y over 25 miles in diameter. The antennas could be moved along the axis of the Y to trade off resolution and sensitivity. Each antenna was identical so the mass production techniques could be used to manufacture the dishes, receivers, amplifiers, transmission lines and processing equiement.
