During the 1950's Radio Astronomy became one of the mainstream branches of science. In post war academia, "Big Science" was born out of the necessity of raising large sums of money to build ever larger dishes. Larger dishes were needed to improve resolution and to detect ever fainter signals. Successful scientists had to be not only knowledgable and inovative, but needed to be adept fund raisers and adminstrators as the scale of instruments grew.
